FORTY-FIVE padi farmers who are cultivating a 16ha plot of land under "Projek Sawah Kampung Sawah Ring" in Ledang claimed that muddy water from the nearby Grisek water treatment plant has been flowing into their land.

They said the water flowing along the Abdan canal from the water treatment plant appeared murky. This has caused a nearby oil palm estate to be covered in mud and its drainage clogged.

The village's project vice-chairman Abdul Rahim Md Husin, 44, said padi plots were covered with mud three-centimetre thick.

"This has been happening for some time now. and a complaint has been lodged with the authorities. We heard of promises to clean the affected canal three times a year. Unfortunately, the promises have not been fulfilled ," said Abdul Rahim.

Farmer Japry Yatim, 40, said the muddy water had brought hardship to farmers and nearby residents.

"I hope the authorities will clean up the clogged drains and canals quickly, and find ways to come up with better drainage systems," said Japry. -- By Hai Rozzaman Jalal
