Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said it was important for them to know the contents inside the Quran to enable them to know the values of Islam.
Speaking to villagers at the Kampung Payamas mosque, he said the state had made it a culture among the Muslims to read and understand the Quran for the past 15 years.
We introduced the Quran reading programme, which also included translation of its contents, in 1996.
The programe has helped many civil servants, politicians and villagers to know the contents of the Quran, he said before presenting Ramadan aid to nearly1,000 needy people at the Kampung Payamas mosque in Ledang on Friday.
Abdul Ghani, who was accompanied by his wife Datin Paduka Prof Jamilah Ariffin, said before the programme was launched, many Muslims read the Quran without understanding its contents.
He said it had been a must do among Muslims in Johor to learn and read the Quran since the early days but sadly it did not cover learning the Arabic language.
He said it differed with some countries such as South Korea and Japan, those who wanted to convert were required to learn Arabic first to enable them to understand the Quran.
On the Ramadan aid, Abdul Ghani said the Ledang Umno divisions welfare bureau decided to provide cash and food aid to nearly 1,000 needy people this year.
He said the recipients included 336 orphans, 473 poor students and some 40 single mothers who came from 138 villages throughout the division.
Since the number of recipients was big Prof Jamilah decided to help present aid to the single mothers outside the mosque while Abdul Ghani presented aid to the others inside the building.
We have to present the aid fast as there are too many recipients and they also need to break their fast soon, she added.
