ARENA NAMED AFTER SETTLER

JOHOR Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman recently opened a sports arena named Gelanggang Sukan Tok Laji.

The arena was named after Tok Laji, a pioneer settler of the Kesang Valley in Kampung Kesang Tasik in Tangkak, Muar.

Tok Laji, of Bugis descent, was believed to be one of the earliest settlers who founded the village in the 1790s.

The arena was named after him to remind the new generation of the history of Kesang in Ledang district.

"Although there has never been any official records on the opening of Kesang, also known as Kesang Valley by the residents, there is some record of its history at the Historical Museum in Malacca.

"The state government will interview local residents about the place and record its history," Ghani said at the closing ceremony of a sports carnival held there recently.

Ledang member of parliament Hamim Samuri, senator Ahmad Yusof, who is also the organising chairman for the sports carnival, and Ledang district officer Amran Ab Rahman were also present.
