"So far, I have all that I need including books. If there is nothing else to buy, I will ask my mother to save the money so I can use it for next year," she said.
A total of RM87,900 were given out and each secondary and primary school student received RM500 and RM300, respectively.
The eldest of four siblings from Parit Raja, Gersik, said since her mother Inaiah Shafaat, 45, separated from Normashitah's father five years ago, the family has been depending on her mother's income as a rubber tapper.
The ceremony to present the zakat was officiated by Ledang member of parliament Hamim Samuri.
Takaful Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Dr Hadenan Jalil presented the cheque for the zakat to Muar deputy education officer Jamal Abdullah.
