THREE narrow bridges along Jalan Bukit Gambir-Sengkang, Ledang, need to be widened for the safety of motorists and to avoid accidents.

A recent survey showed that the three bridges were used by vehicles, including heavy vehicles transporting agricultural produce.

A motorist, Elias Abd Rahman, 76, urged the Public Works Department to widen the bridges to allow vehicles to pass one another safely.

He said the bridge at Km25.6 at Jalan Sengkang near Kampung Parit Kassim needed to be upgraded because of its narrowness, adding that this posed a danger to vehicles.

"I am forced to slow down my car when I reach the bridge because I fear it may graze a lorry or another vehicle.

"I also need to be careful while using this road as there is a bend in the road that is hidden by bushes.

"If the road is widened, it would give road users more confidence when using it," said Elias who lives in Kampung Seri Baka, Sengkang Batu 20.

Elias added that the fencing guard and the road railings at the bridge were also damaged, probably while vehicles inch to the kerb to avoid grazing each other.

Elias said two other bridges, one near the Muar Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (Puspen) and the other at Kampung Datuk Ngah Sengkang Batu 20, only needed to be widened as the bridges were located on straight roads.

This is the only road that villagers from Kampung Sengkang Batu 22, Kampung Baru Melepang, Kampung Teratai and its surrounding areas can use to go to Bukit Gambir.
