The group were attacked when they were approaching the Padang Batu stop at 2.30pm. They were trapped for about an hour before they could call for help.

"The bees attacked and hovered above my head. At that time, I had to lie down and stay still," said Rosdi Nawi, 45, a Universiti Malaya (UM) staff who was among the climbers.

Rosdi and four other group members, Zaini Abd Aziz, 31, Wan Mohd Fazly Wan Mansor, 20, Zuhaw Kasa, 41, and Shahril Izar, 25, trekked for two hours before they could get help.

They were taken to the Tangkak Hospital.

The remaining 16 climbers, which included students and staff of UM, spent the night in the mountain before continuing with their climb.

Earlier, a National Park ranger, who was on his way to rescue the climbers, was injured when he fell on a tree stump. Azman Ithnin, 47, only suffered minor injuries and received outpatient treatment.
