TANGKAK: A rubber tapper was shocked to find a newborn baby girl crying in a dry creek at a plantation in Kampung Melayu Raya in Sagil near here.

Initially Mohd Shuib Md Dasin, 53, thought the cries were from a kitten.

But when he went to check, he found a naked baby with her umbilical cord still intact.

“The baby is plump and looked healthy. I immediately called my wife who was working nearby,” he told reporters here yesterday.

“We alerted some villagers who brought a sarong to cover the baby,” he added.

Mohd Shuib said they then took the baby to a neighbour’s house about 100m from the creek.

“We gave her some milk and she fell asleep,” he said.

Ledang deputy police chief Deputy Supt Mohd Salleh Abdul Razak said village head Supaat Wagiman informed Sagil police about the baby.

He said the girl, who was believed to have been delivered less than 24 hours before she was discovered, was sent to the Tangkak Hospital for observation.

Supt Mohd Salleh said police would carry out a DNA test to determine her parents.

“We urge those with information related to the baby to call Ledang police at 06-9781 222 ,” he said, adding that police would investigate the case under Section 317 of the Penal Code for baby dumping.
