PATRIOTIC: SK Bekoh kids learn about unity and the independence movement

LEDANG: IT was a memorable National Day celebration for 147 pupils, including 35 Orang Asli children, from SK Bekoh, when they participated in a 2km cycling parade.

Headmaster Kamarudin Ibrahim said the activity was a unique part of the celebration.

"Their bicycles were decorated with the Jalur Gemilang. The pupils also wore clothes with a 1950s era theme," he said at the recent celebration at the school field.

Kamarudin said the Orang Asli pupils who had participated in the activity were from the Temuan tribe.

"The celebration was filled with patriotic fervour. The pupils also shouted 'Merdeka' several times during the celebration," he said.

Kamarudin said the teachers briefed the pupils about the history of the country.

"The pupils learn that unity will prevent colonisation by foreign powers. They are the leaders of tomorrow," he said.

Kamarudin said that through the celebration, the pupils had a better appreciation of the independence movement and the importance of harmony in the country.

He said the school was also honoured to have an army veteran Osman Ismail at the celebration.

Osman was among the heroes who fought against the communists during the Emergency.

The 69-year-old narrated how the people had a difficult time during the communist insurgency as the residents had to depend on tapioca and 'gadong' fruit as their staple.

"The communists were also ruthless and cruel," he said, adding that he did not pursue his studies but worked as a rubber tapper before joining the army.

Osman received a Pingat Gagah Berani medal for his meritorious service in the army.
