THE Ledang Land Office won the best contingent award at the district's recent Merdeka Day celebrations.

The contingent was adjudged the best among government agencies in the marching category, second-best in the banner category and took third place for costume and office decorations.

The contingent received RM1,000 cash and a trophy from Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.

Ghani, in his speech at the event, called on the people to appreciate the country's independence and stressed the importance of unity.

He said the people should always remember that foreigners had managed to colonised this country by employing the "divide and rule" policy.

"They did so by ensuring the Chinese were placed in the urban areas, the Malays in the villages and the Indians in the estates. This caused us to be divided and weak."

Ghani said the people should not let themselves be divided again especially along racial lines.

"The multi-racial nature of our society should be our strength for further developing our country," he said.

Also present at the event were state executive counsellor Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman, Ledang member of parliament Hamim Samuri, Tangkak state assemblyman Goh Tee Tee and Serampang state assemblyman Tahir Md Taat.
