UPBEAT GAMBIR STATE ASSEMBLYMAN UNFAZED BY SLIM WIN

LEDANG: Gambir state assemblyman M. Asojan said the recent general election was the most challenging in his 15 years in politics.

"A new phenomenon resulted in many votes cast against our favour.

"However, I'm grateful as there were many other voters who chose the Barisan Nasional," he said.

He defended his seat by a mere 310 majority in a four-corned fight with PAS' Mahfodz Mohamed who garnered 8,395 votes and independent candidates Mohd Zan Abu (837) and Yunus Mustakim (261).

"Nonetheless, I'm happy to continue serving my constituency.

"Most people would know that there was some dissatisfaction over my selection as a candidate here as evident from protests via banners in several areas in Bukit Gambir.

"However, I was determined to go on as I had the backing of the party's top leadership," said Asojan.

The MIC Johor secretary said the BN machinery worked very hard to retain the Gambir state seat, which he had contested and won since 2004 when the seat was created.

Asojan, however, lamented that it was a tough election with the opposition garnering support as well.

He said the plans for development in Gambir will continue, with the construction of a secondary school, among others.
