TANGKAK: The state government wants all local authorities in Johor to encourage youths to go camping, Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said.
He said the state had directed the authorities to set up campsites about four years ago but not many had carried them out.
Abdul Ghani said campsites were important because there were demands from schools and even factories to organise camping activities.
“We have asked the local authorities to identify suitable sites for camping and we will check how many have implemented the project.
“We want every local authority to have at least one to enable the younger generation to carry out camping activities,” he said after a visit to the Sri Gelam Youth Camp in Sengkang near here yesterday.
Abdul Ghani said the camp project and activities could be based on the West’s summer camp concept except that camping in Johor could also be held during weekends.
He said the state campsites should have the basic necessities such as power and piped water but must also blend in with nature.
He said besides Sengkang, there were other suitable camping sites here as well as in Bekok near Labis, Gunung Pulai, Gunung Lambak in Kluang and Gunung Panti in Kota Tinggi.
For the Sri Gelam Youth Camp, he said the state would allocate RM40,000 to enable its management team to upgrade the power supply cable to three-phase.
