TANGKAK (18 April 2008): The Government has approved a RM10mil allocation to improve drainage and irrigation systems to curb flash floods here.

Ledang MP Hamim Samuri said the allocation was included in the Ninth Malaysia Plan and the projects would be implemented soon.

The projects include works on Sungai Tangkak to Sungai Kesang and the drainage system in the town.

“Tenders will be called soon and the works are expected to begin in October. When completed, we hope Tangkak will be free of flash floods,” he said after a meeting with Johor Drainage and Irrigation Department director Chong Chee Han on Wednesday.

Tangkak, which is famous for textile shops, was hit by flash floods recently.

He said the latest incident took place on April 8 when Kampung Payamas, Taman Lagenda, Taman Tangkak Jaya Tiga, Taman Payamas and Taman Bahagia were flooded.

Besides these areas, he said that villages such as Kampung Solok, Kampung Bukit Banjar, Anjung Batu and Kampung Seri Makmor were frequently flooded.

Rivers in the affected areas would be deepened and widened to speed up water flow from Tangkak, said Hamim.
