TANGKAK: Hunger and the feeling of being lost drove an escapee to return to the Bukit Gambir drug rehabilitation centre near here.

Ledang deputy police chief Deputy Supt Salleh Abdul Razak said the inmate was spotted loitering near the centre at about 1am yesterday and subsequently recaptured.

“We believe he was hungry and did not know where to go,” DSP Salleh told The Star.

Another escapee was detained in Panchor, a nearby fishing town, at about 9pm on Friday.

The police manhunt has now narrowed down to three escapees.

Inmates at the centre had rioted at about 9pm on Thursday and 21 escaped.

They torched a building and partially burnt a storehouse.

The public are urged to call the nearest police station or contact DSP Salleh personally at 019-2799 429 if they have information on the remaining escapees.
