Centre commandant V. M. Asok Kumar said this is the latest course offered for inmates in drug rehabilitation centres nationwide with cooperation from non-governmental organisations.

He said all selected inmates will be awarded with a certificate after passing their examinations to be supervised by the respective NGOs.

"The inmates are lucky as the course is provided free. Otherwise, they have to pay RM2,000 to acquire the skills outside.

"I hope they will make full use of their skills after they are released from the centre.

"The 30 inmates are those who are interested in the course and are about to be released soon," he said.

The three-month training will be held once a week and handled by four experts of Pusat Pemulihan Teraju, Pusat Pemulihan Cahaya and Pusat Tabib SK.

Other courses available for inmates are farming, livestock farming, vocational training and handicraft-making.

Pusat Pemulihan Teraju manager Chia Sui Kin said the free course offered by his centre is part of his social responsibility to give back to the society.

"After the course, the inmates will be equipped with new skills which could help them earn at least RM1,000 a month. Those who are experienced enough could easily rake in RM3,000 to RM4,000 a month.

"To be an expert in the field, one has to learn at least seven years," he said.
