Johor needs RM130m to build 90 Islamic schools

THE state government will find ways to raise RM130 million to build 90 Islamic schools in Johor within two years.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said the planning and construction of the schools had been delayed for the past 14 years because of a lack of funds.

"As the Muslim population is growing rapidly in Johor, there is a need to construct more religious centres and schools," he said after opening the new RM200,000 Surau Al-Fauzan at Taman Tanjung Gading in Tanjung Agas, Muar, on Sunday.

Currently, there are more than 200,000 students and 5,000 teachers in Islamic schools in the state.

Ghani said Johor had more than 8,000 mosques and thousands of surau to cater to the needs of rural and urban Muslims.

He urged Muslims to use mosques and surau as centres of unity and education.

"They should read the Quran on a daily basis and not just keep the holy book in drawers and cupboards to only read during the fasting month."
