COUPLE'S HARROWING ORDEAL

MUAR: FIVE masked robbers armed with knives and parang broke into the house of a senior citizen in Parit Babok, Bukit Gambir, here recently and escaped with valuables worth about RM8,000.

Ahmad Kamidi, 81, and his wife, Fatimah Ismail, 77, were sleeping in the living room when they were awakened by noise from the kitchen at 4am.

"When we first saw the huge, dark figure near the refrigerator, we thought it was a ghost," said Fatimah.

She said the robber, believed to have entered the house by cutting a window grille, was dressed in black and wore a mask.

"We only realised they were robbers when his four accomplices entered the house and ordered us to be quiet in a thick Indonesian accent, with knives pointed at our necks.

"I was so shocked. When they demanded for the keys to our bedroom, I could not move. They became angry and one of them threatened to hurt my husband.

"After getting the keys, they ransacked the place for about 30 minutes with one of the men looking over us," said Fatimah.

The men escaped with RM4,000 in cash, jewellery worth about RM3,800, some documents, including identification papers and land ownership grant, the couple's car and mobile phones.
