MALAYSIA needs to have a knowledge-based economic model to reduce the country's dependence on foreign workers, especially unskilled labour.
Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said mastering certain fields could help Malaysia become a developed country and reduce its dependence on foreign labour.
He said people in developed countries usually have a high level of knowledge and skill that would become the countries' economic backbone.
Ghani was speaking after the opening ceremony of the SJKC Pui Nan multi-purpose hall in Tangkak on Sunday.
"The quality and development of the nation will depend on its people.
"Our economy should be based on knowledge, creativity and innovation," he said.
Ghani also said the teaching of mathematics and science in English should be reviewed as students of Chinese schools were also doing well when learning those subjects in Mandarin.
"I believe this was the reason why Chinese schools like SJKC Pui Nan had done better in those subjects in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination compared with national schools last year," he said.
"I hope our Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin would do something about it because Johor had stated its position on this matter."
At the ceremony, Ghani announced that an additional allocation of RM300,000 will be given to enhance the school's infrastructure and amenities.
