TANGKAK: MCA leaders have been urged to focus on boosting unity not only within the party but also in society to face the challenges brought about by the global recession.
Party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said there should not be any personal agenda but only those for the party and nation during these trying times.
Speaking to reporters in Kesang near here yesterday, he said leaders should capitalise on the Chinese New Year celebrations to foster a stronger bond and understanding with the people.
“We see that the Chinese New Year celebrations held here and at other places received tremendous response from the people. This indicates that MCA is very much united and accepted by the people,” he said at Johor MCA Youth chairman Haw Chin Teck’s Chinese New Year open house.
Ong, who was accompanied by Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong, said he was confident the people in Johor still supported the party.
Judging from the large crowd which attended Haw’s open house, he said he was confident a state-level celebration, to be held next month, would attract an even bigger crowd.
To a question on political differences among party leaders, Ong said it was normal for people to have different views but on the whole, Johor MCA was united.
“We believe MCA leaders in the state are very committed in boosting unity within the party and with the people.
“I see that this year, Johor MCA will get stronger and better despite the challenges pose by the global recession,” he added.
