LORRIES, transporting red earth from a quarry in a village are polluting homes with dust and dirt en route for a construction site near Parit Kassan in Bukit Gambir.

Resident Zakaria Haiyun, 52, said that every time a lorry passes by, it leaves a cloud of red dust in its wake. The dust then gets into the homes of the residents, especially those whose homes are by the roadside.

Zakaria said the situation was made worse because the contractor did not wash the tyres of the lorries before the vehicles leave the construction site and quarry.

"We have to keep our windows shut at all times because of this.  One of my children is suffering from asthma caused by the pollution," he said.

Gambir state assemblyman M. Asojan recently visited the residents together with Mukim Grisek village chief Ishak Abu Bakar.

Asojan said after the meeting with the contractor, the latter had agreed to wash the tyres and step up efforts to keep the environment clean.

"The contractor has also assured me that the lorries will not use the road when there are students coming home  after school to ensure the children's safety," Asojan said.

Meanwhile Parit Kassan Village Security and Development Committee chairman Mohd Hamzah Basar said the residents are not against development projects in the area.

"We just want the contractor to act more responsibly and to think about public safety," Hamzah said.
