He said the initiated "soft approach" to educate them to use the facilities to prevent their motorcycles from being stolen should have been supported.

To stress his point, Harun took a group of reporters to the parking bays in the heart of Tangkak town recently.

It turned out that all the eight motorcycles parked there did not use the safety locks provided.

At that moment, a supervisor of a security firm, Kudral Surit, 47, arrived on his motorcycle to park at the bay.

He was immediately "pulled up" by the police chief when he did not use the safety lock.

Harun then showed him how to use the device.

Kudral said he did not know that the safety locks were meant for motorcycles, but added that he was thankful for the "education" which could prevent his motorbike from being stolen.

"I will tell my friends who own motorcycles to use the safety locks when they park their bikes at these bays," he said.

Harun said about 20 to 30 motorcycles were reported stolen in Ledang every month.

He added that relations and cooperation between the public and the police should be strengthened to curb such crime.
