The accident, which occurred at Km146.8 of the North-South Expressway near Tangkak at 2am, involved a Singapore-bound bus belonging to Grassfield Bus Company, registered in Petaling Jaya.

Those killed were four men, four women and the two children. Seven were killed on the spot while the others died at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar.

Those injured were sent to the Muar and Tangkak hospitals where 14 were warded and the rest given outpatient treatment. They included three children aged between 9 and 14.

Eight of the deceased have been identified. They are Khor Mooi Hui, 49, and her 20-year-old daughter Foo Pei Sin, from Johor Baru; Fuh Mooi Lang, 57, and Chan Jia Yit, 9, both from Sitiawan, Perak; Ng Siew Woon, 12; Ng Ah Hua, 40; Ho Lee Lee, 42; and Hong Kong citizen Ho Chung Shing.

Firemen took about four hours to extricate the bodies from the wreckage before sending them to the mortuary at the hospital here.

The bus left Pantai Remis in Perak at 7pm on Saturday with 26 passengers, a driver and a co-driver onboard.

Police detained the driver, 38, and his assistant, 26, to assist in investigations following the accident.

Khor's husband Foo Chong Ern, 62, said his wife had called him from Ipoh before leaving and he had been waiting for them in Johor Baru.

"I was shocked when I received a call from someone this morning who said the express bus was involved in an accident.

"They (Khor and Pei Sin) were in joyous mood and I could not wait to see them. But the phone call last night appeared to be our last conversation," he said.

Most of the injured said they did not know what happened as they were asleep.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Nasir Ramli, accompanied by his deputy Superintendent Lee Choon Guan, said at the scene police believed the accident was caused by the driver losing control of the vehicle.

"Several bodies have yet to be claimed as their identities were unknown because no documents were found on them.

"We will only know their identities after they are claimed by relatives," he said.

Nasir urged eyewitnesses to come forward to assist in the investigations.
