TWO water pumps have been installed at the water gate in Sungai Kesang in Tangkak as a flood mitigation measure.
Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said the Department of Irrigation and Drainage had installed the pumps in anticipation of high tide and heavy rainfall during the rainy season.
Ghani said the pumps were important to prevent Sungai Kesang, which has five gates, from overflowing.
"We are worried that if the problem is not settled swiftly, many areas will be flooded when it rains heavily during high tide," he said after visiting a flood evacuation centre at Kampung Sri Makmor, Tangkak.
He said heavy rainfall on Dec 8 had caused flooding in several villages, including Kampung Sri Makmor, Kampung Sialang Dalam, Kampung Seberang Gajah and Kampung Tanjung Labuh.
He said several long-term plans were being finalised to solve the flood woes in Ledang.
A RM24 million flood mitigation plan for Sungai Tangkak, which flows into Sungai Kesang, was approved last month and the work is expected to be completed by 2010.
Ghani said the state government and DID would deepen and clean up rivers in the district.
He said flood retaining embankments were being erected in Kampung Sri Makmor and Kampung Paya Mas.
