AFTER TWO COLLAPSED JETTIES, VILLAGERS THANKFUL FOR FLOATING JETTY

By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH

MUAR: After two concrete jetties in Kampung Pengkalan Kota in Bukit Serampang collapsed into the Sungai Muar within two years, the government decided to build a floating jetty for the villagers.

The RM100,000 project included a fisherman’s hut built on land nearby.

The new jetty was built just metres from the site of the collapsed jetties.

Pengkalan Kota village head Anuar Hamzah said the new floating jetty was m

ore practical for the village, which is located along the bend of Sungai Muar.

Renewed hope: The villagers walking on the floating jetty.

The government, through the Drainage and Irrigation Department spent about RM50,000 to build a jetty in 2007 but it collapsed several months later.

The department then built another jetty with the cost of

about RM250,000 but that too collapsed after six months, he said in Kampung Pengkalan Kota last Wednesday.

Anuar said after the two jetty projects for the village failed, fishermen in the village requested for a floating jetty from the government.

He said the villagers, especially the fishermen were grateful to the government for building the floating jetty.

However, he added that despite the fact that the jetty was afloat and could not collapse, the bank where it was located was exposed to erosion and was in danger of eroding.

“If the bank collapses, it will destroy the hut and we will have to build another hut for the fishermen,” he added.
