PETROL PUMPS DESTROYED IN FIRE

A MOTORCYCLIST, who filled a plastic container with petrol while his motorcycle engine was running, caused a fire that destroyed two petrol pumps in Pekan Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, on Monday evening.

In the 6.45pm incident, the motorcyclist, who was in his 30s, fled the scene after dragging his burnt motorcycle 50m before abandoning it.

He was believed to have panicked when his motorcycle caught fire.

Tangkak Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said thankfully the petrol station attendant acted swiftly and put out the fire using a fire extinguisher.

"We received an emergency call at 6.47pm and upon our arrival, we found the fire had been put out."

He added that the motorcyclist had been identified and his statement would be recorded.

A fire forensic investigation officer from Muar found the fire started when sparks from the motorcycle engine ignited the petrol which had spilt from the plastic container.
