THE Tangkak District Council has been urged by residents of the Serom 4 Public Housing Area (Perumahan Awam Serom 4) in Ledang to improve the drainage system around their homes.
Residents said the drains, which had become shallow and clogged due to garbage and waste from construction sites nearby, needed an upgrade.
The drains were built 15 years ago and are no longer adequate to channel water away from the housing area, they said.
A check found the drains clogged with dirty black water and were a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Parts of the drains have also been blocked, especially the areas near the surau and the main road leading to Serom town.
Serom 4 Public Housing Area Umno branch head Murad Jaafar said due to the bad condition of the drains, residents were exposed to flash floods every time it rained.
On hot days, water collected in the drains would become dirty and emit a bad smell.
"The residents are concerned that their health will be affected if the drains in their area, which are made of concrete, are not cleaned and upgraded to 'U' drains."
Murad said that replacing the concrete drains with "U" drains would allow water to flow into the main drain easily, therefore eliminating the mosquito breeding grounds and prevent flash floods.
He said the situation was made worse by irresponsible people who threw rubbish into the drains.
Overdue maintenance work by the authorities also further compounded the matter.
"For example, because the drain next to the surau on Jalan Cengal 3 is clogged, water from the drain overflows onto the road and floods the surau.
"I hope the local authority will look into the situation and replace the concrete drains," he said.
