FLOATING JETTY REPLACES COLLAPSED ONE

A CONCRETE jetty at Kampung Pengkalan Kota in Durian Condong, Tangkak, which collapsed after seven months of use, has been replaced with a new floating jetty.

Construction of the new RM100,000 jetty began in August.

Situated 50m from the previous jetty, the new jetty has 28 floats and four pillars to enable it to stay afloat according to the water level of Sungai Muar.

The floating jetty is situated far from the river bend said to be the cause of erosion, which had led to the collapse of the original structure.

The new location was chosen after studies showed that the previous location was unsuitable and that muddy water had made conditions unstable.

Before it gave way on May 9, the previous jetty was built at a cost of RM160,000 to replace an older structure which had collapsed in February last year due to erosion following heavy flooding in late 2006.

Like the second concrete jetty, the older structure had only been used for a few months.

The construction of the floating jetty was well-received by residents, who saw it as being safer and easier to use, especially by anglers who frequented the area on weekends.

Kampung Durian Condong headman Anuar Hamzah said the residents were thankful to the state government and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, which had built the jetty.

"The floating jetty is more suitable compared with the previous one because this area is prone to floods."
